About Carol Tunney

“As a physician and patient, I have come to recognize that true healing is achieved only through love. We are spiritual beings, and our spirits must be nurtured in order to thrive. Joy, compassion, respect, inspiration, humor – these are the tools of love and the greatest gifts I have to offer.”

Shamanic practitioner and educator, Carol M. Tunney, MD graduated from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine with Distinction in Research and completed residency in OB/GYN at Wesson Women’s Hospital of Baystate Medical Center, an affiliate of Tufts Medical School.

As an OB/GYN, she specialized in working with women who had experienced domestic violence, rape, and incest. This led to a deep appreciation for the necessity of love and spiritual healing as an integral part of health and patient empowerment. It also led to her personal transition from allopathic physician to shamanic practitioner.

During residency and increasingly throughout her solo practice, Carol experienced a series of profound personal challenges and spiritual awakenings. This lead to the development of life-long intuitive gifts through formal study with the Foundation of Shamanic Studies and several extremely gifted local healers. As the results of the Shamanic healings became more profound, Carol came to realize her path was as a spiritual healer, teacher, and bridge connecting the best of Western medicine and technology with the wisdom and compassion of these ancient spiritual practices.

While in transition, Carol began teaching Biological Sciences as part time faculty at Berkshire Community College. Shortly thereafter she was asked to develop and teach a two-semester Anatomy and Physiology class for the Nursing Program at Southern Vermont College. Within three years Carol chaired the Division of Science and Technology where she developed and taught an experiential course on integrative therapies.

Continuing to investigate the connection between Western medicine and shamanic healing, in 2008 she published a case report on shamanic healing of fibromyalgia. The report was published in Bridges Magazine, a publication of The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM).

In May 2009, Carol attended “A Gathering of Eagles”; an invitational meeting sponsored by the Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey Medical Foundation. A gathering of fifty MD’s and DO’s, the “Eagles” prepared a document for submission to President Obama with recommendations to restore spirituality to medicine, promote holistic and integrative medicine, and heal the medical care system. In June 2009, she presented a workshop on Sacred Surgery: the Role of Spiritual Healing in the Surgical Setting at the 2009 International ISSSEEM Conference.” For the past two years she has co-facilitated The Phoenix Experience in Living Medicine with Dr. Gladys McGarey, an 8 day transformational workshop.

Currently residing in Williamstown, MA, Carol maintains an active shamanic healing practice, hosts a weekly radio show on WBTN entitled “Natural Instincts: Health, Healing, and Conscious Living”, offers shamanic workshops, and mentors shamanic apprentices.
